  • Stability +/-0.1°C
  • Low Temperature Radiation Pyrometer Primary Source
  • 995 Emissivity
  • 50mm Diameter Cavity
Secondary Laboratory

The Isotech Hyperion R is a compact, highly stable low‑temperature blackbody source designed for calibrating infrared thermometers and thermal imagers across the range –20 °C to 125 °C. With its deep cavity, emissivity of >0.995 and excellent temperature uniformity, the Hyperion R delivers laboratory‑grade performance in a portable format. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, the Hyperion R was widely used for the calibration of medical non‑contact thermometers, both in laboratories and in mobile testing environments. It is equally suited to industrial applications, quality control and research.

Isothermal cavity with high emissivity

At the core of the Hyperion R is a 50 mm diameter, 150 mm deep cavity engineered to produce a stable and uniform radiation field. With an emissivity greater than 0.995, the source behaves as an almost ideal blackbody, enabling low‑uncertainty calibration of IR instruments. Temperature control is achieved using thermoelectric heat pumps, providing solid‑state, vibration‑free heating and cooling. This technology ensures exceptionally low gradients and a quiet, reliable operation.

Precise control and built‑in traceability

The Hyperion R features a digital controller that allows any temperature between –20 °C and 125 °C to be set with precision. Traceability is ensured through a built‑in temperature indicator and a supplied platinum resistance thermometer (PRT). Each unit includes a three‑point traceable calibration certificate, and optional UKAS calibration is available for both the PRT and the radiometric output.

Thermal performance

The Hyperion R offers:

  • > Stability: ±0.1 °C
  • > Emissivity: >0.995
  • > Display resolution: 0.01 °C to 0.1 °C
  • > Cavity dimensions: 50 mm diameter, 150 mm deep
  • > Power consumption: 200 W
  • > Supply: universal 80–264 V AC

Distributed thermoelectric heating ensures excellent uniformity across the entire cavity depth.

Gallium Fixed‑Point Cell

For applications requiring the lowest uncertainties, an optional Gallium Fixed Point Cell (982‑05‑01) is available.

The cell contains 7N‑purity gallium and is placed inside the cavity. As the metal melts at 29.7646 °C, it forms a stable and precise melt plateau that serves as a highly accurate reference temperature. Once melted, the cell can be frozen simply by lowering the Hyperion R temperature.

Design and portability

Weighing 8.3 kg and measuring 310 × 265 × 200 mm, the Hyperion R is compact enough for field use yet robust enough for daily laboratory operation. A dedicated carrying case is available for transport and protection. The Isotech Hyperion R is a powerful, accurate and versatile low‑temperature blackbody source. With its high emissivity, excellent uniformity, built‑in traceability and optional fixed‑point cell, it is an ideal solution for medical, industrial and scientific infrared calibration.
